Artist Statement
I am inspired by nature specifically how small organisms support larger life forms. The series of clay works I am creating are based on ocean invertebrates that help support the ocean's ecosystems. I see God’s hands of creation at work, especially in these seemingly inconsequential organisms that support so much life.
The bright vivid colors, meticulously detailed surfaces, and brilliantly intricate textures of these invertebrates inform my work. I marvel at the fact that these small, simple animals, some of which are immobile, keep the ocean alive and vibrant. I create my pieces from clay and I emulate the movement, forms, surfaces, and textures of these amazing life forms. I work with clay as it allows for movement and fluidity, the clay holds the touch of my hand and preserves the textures that I form. I meticulously work, and immerse myself, to create textures and surfaces that are reminiscent of these small invertebrates. |
Clay can be extremely delicate but immensely strong at the same time and when fired clay becomes permanent. As I make I feel connected to God and feel a semblance of what it is like to create. I have such deep adoration for the design and purpose God gave these small simple creatures when He created them. As a Christian, I see God in all facets of nature, and this has a great influence on the way I view the world and the work I create. My work is to honor and pay homage to God’s creation by taking my artistic abilities and creating work that represents these beautiful creatures. If God can give such a simple form a purpose, then what kind of a purpose does he have intended for a more complex organism like me?
“How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number- living both large and small;” Psalm 104:24-25. |
